About Bakunawa

Bakunawa is an ancestral and spiritual market space that honors the sacred legacy of the babaylan: the healers, seers, and spirit-keepers of pre-colonial Philippines. Rooted in indigenous wisdom, this market offers more than goods—it is a ceremonial space for cultural remembrance, soul nourishment, and communal healing.

Named after the Bakunawa—the mythic moon-eating dragon of Visayan lore—this gathering honors the cycles of death and rebirth. In folklore, Bakunawa rises from the deep to swallow the moon, a symbol of cosmic disruption and transformation. In this spirit, we reclaim what was eclipsed by colonization and call back the silenced voices of our ancestors. Bakunawa becomes a portal: a space to remember, to resist, and to rise.

Held on the new moon in Libra, October 18 & 19, this market is divinely timed. The new moon marks a sacred beginning—a chance to plant intentions in darkness, to trust in unseen growth. Libra, ruled by Venus, brings balance, harmony, beauty, and the right relationships. It calls us into sacred reciprocity—with ourselves, each other, and the Earth. This cosmic alignment supports our collective return to ancestral ways that honor spirit, justice, and interconnection.

Bakunawa is not just a market. It is a movement—a ritual—a remembering.
